A bowler hat is a hard hat with a rounded crown. It was made by Thomas Bowler and William Bowler in London in 1849. It was popular among the British, Irish and American working classes in the second half of the 19th century. Later it was popular among the middle and upper classes.

It was commissioned by Thomas and William Bowler for James Lock & Co of St James in 1849. There was a legend that a customer wanted to make a low crown hat for gamekeepers to protect them from hanging branches.

James Lock & Co. claims that the Bowler hat was designed for Edward Coke, brother of Thomas Coke, 2nd Earl of Leicester, who paid 12 shillings for the new hat.

The Bowler hat was used by actors such as Charlie Chaplin. In the 1964 film Mary Poppins, London banker George Banks wears a bowler hat. It is part of the Droog suit worn by the main character Alex in the film version of A Clockwork Orange.

The use of hats as props, as seen in the 1972 film Cabaret, would become one of his trademarks.
